An emblematic actress of African Cinema, Naky Sy Savané has acted both in Theatre
and Cinema with Africa’s and France’s most prominent directors. Her career began
at a very early age with Henri Duparc’s Bal Poussière, which was followed by several
feature films. She received two prizes for a female role in 1994 at the Vues d’Afrique
Festival in Montreal and the Kouriba Festival in Morrocco for her part in Au Nom
du Christ (In the Name of Christ) by Roger Gnoan M’Bala. In 1998 and 1999, she received
the Kilimandjaro price for best actress as well as the UNICEF price at FESPACO.
She played the part of ‘La Griotte’ in Sembène Ousmane’s Moolade and that of the
president’s wife in Fanta Régina Nacro’s La Nuit de la Verité (Night of Truth).
Aside for her career as an actress, Savané actively militates to foster access to
education and women’s emancipation. She has recently joined GAMS (Abolition of Sexual
Mutilations Group) of which she is the director in Marseille. She also has founded
the Afriki Djigui Theatri, the first Theatre of Africa and the Black Diaspora as
well as Miroirs et Cinémas d’Afriques, the first African Cinema Festival in Marseille.
