Hesham Selim was born in 1959, in Cairo, son of the late Saleh Selim famously known
as “Il Maestro”, Egypt’s greatest football sensation of all times. Like his father
he grew to become an Egyptian heart throb with an immense fan base of all ages ,
but this time in Cinema ,his true passion.
He began his career at the tender age of thirteen, when he starred in front of the
great screen icon Faten Hamama as one of her adolescent, mischievous children in
one of the Egyptian Cinema classics”EMBRATORYET MEEM” aka The “EMPIRE M” in 1972.He
went on to starring in Youssef Chahine’s “AWDET EL IBN EL DAL”as “Ibrahim” the rebellious
son in 1976.His career started to flourish playing diverse roles such as the playboy
pilot in “TAZWEER FE AWRAQ RASMEYA” with Mahmoud Abdel Aziz, Mervat Amin & Iman
El Bahr Darwish, and his talent began to blossom one film after the other as his
subtlety and versatility in interpreting his roles started to become evident on
screen, with every role he performed. He shifted from one character to the other,
one time playing the mischievous, another the rebellious or at times the ruthless
,scrupulous spoilt student as in “EGHTIYAL MODARRESSA”aka”THE ASSASINATION OF A
TEACHER” in front of Nabila Ebeid in 1988,or a scoundrel & burglar in “EL
HAGGAMA” aka “The BURGLARS” with Layla Elwi in the early 90s.
His career took a turning point when he starred in front of International Film star
Omar Sherif in Hany Lashin’s“EL ARAGOZ” aka “THE PUPPETEER” in 1989, which earned
him a Best Supporting Actor Award in 1990, for interpreting with great spontaneity
the role of the , heartless, evil, selfish ungrateful son.
His success was further concretized as he proved not only to be a distinguished
actor of unique allure, charm and class but also a multitalented performer on stage
who can dance & sing in a stunning manner, in his two plays “SHARE’E MOHAMMED ALI”
in front of the marvelous Sherihan and the late Farid Shawki and”LAMA BABA YENAM”infront
of Yosra & the late comedian Ala’a Walley El Din.
He also performed in Rafa’at EL Mihi’s “YA MAHALABEYA YA” in the early 90s one of
the important & few musicals of contemporary Egyptian Cinema with Layla Elwi. He
met once again with Faten Hamma in “ARD EL AHLAM”in 1993. Starred in comic films
such as “EL NAZER” aka “THE PRINCIPAL”playing the role of a teacher in an unruly,
chaotic school trying to help the mischievous student “Alaa Waley EL Din” bring
back order to the school. He also starred once again in one of “Youssef Chahine’s
films “ALXANDRIA KAMAN WE KAMAN”.
Hesham Selim also starred in many important Egyptian soap operas, including “LAYALI
EL HELMIA” the sequel by renowned scriptwriter, Osama Anwar Okasha,”MALAK ROHI”,”LEKAA
ALA El HAWA” “AMAKEN FEL KALB”,and most recently “EL MASRAWEYA”, playing the role
of the fair, devoted mayor in a small town in the country side, in a historic epic,
depicting an important era in Egypt’s history , the early 30s.
He also played the historic role of “Abdel Hakim Amer” in “GAMAL ABDEL NASSER” in
1999 which won him a State Award (Ga’ezet El Dawla EL Takdireya) , then starred
in another political film ”EL ASSIFA” by Khaled Youssef , then went on to playing
a devoted doctor in “ENTA OMRY” also by Khaled Youssef ,a journalist in “EL BAHETHAT
AN EL HOREYA” ,”KHEYANA MASHROOA” and most recently a policeman in “EL AWELA FEL
HOB” by “Wahid Hamid”.
In 2006 he won the Best Actor Award from the Egyptian Radio & Television Festival.
He is the father of 3 beautiful girls and continues to mesmerize his fans with his
subdued performances and his sheer, utter class & mystique.
